Rhodopes
Mountain
Rhodopes Mountain is very beautiful with its green
hills, wide meadows and river gorges. It is the mysterious Bulgarian
mountain linked with the legends of the mythical Thracian singer
Orpheus and the Dionisus. Throughout their thousands of years long
history the scenic paths of the mountains have echoed the steps
of the Thracians, the Slavs, the Proto-Bulgarians, the Greeks and
the Romans. That explains the great number of legends connected
with the Rhodopes history. The name of the mountain is connected
with the legend about the girl named Rhodopa. The entire mountain
is dotted with Thracian and Slavic sanctuaries, old forts and landmarks.
From the other side macabre gorges and caves cut the green hills
and make the landscape extremely picturesque. Rhodopes Mountain
is suitable for hiking, horse riding, caving, ecotourism etc.
